Long before outdoor clothing became science, explorers, mountaineers and sailors had solutions of their own: tightly woven cotton, treated with oil or wax to keep the weather where it belonged.

The Expedition Parka from our friends at A Piece of Chic takes its cues from the expedition parkas of the early 20th century. The shell is cut from a dark olive, heavily oiled cotton fabric by Halley Stevensons of Scotland, suppliers of weather-resistant fabrics since 1864. Wind-resistant and water-repellent, it will pick up personality and patina as you wear it. Memories of your expeditions, of sorts.

Inside, a quilted microfiber lining by British Millerain provides insulation against colder weather. The generous hood and waist can be adjusted with self-tightening metal clips, while an interior pocket provides somewhere sensible for the things you’d rather not lose on an expedition. Or on the bus.
