The Largeot traces its origins to the traditional trousers worn by French craftsmen in the late 1800s. In 1896, Lyon workwear maker Adolphe Lafont commercialised the Largeot as a work trouser, adding practical details, such as the classic ruler pocket. 

The unusual demi-ballon shape was not a fashion statement, but purely functional. Generous around the thighs for freedom of movement, then narrowing towards the ankles to reduce the risk of fabric catching while working. Add a long thigh pocket for the folding ruler and a small gusset pocket for a watch or chalk, and you’ve got the ultimate outdoor work pants. 

Among the French Compagnons, different trades developed their own colours, with black traditionally associated with carpenters and roofers. This high-waisted version is made in an exceptionally heavy (we mean it!) cotton corduroy, with an adjustable martingale at the back. 

Made in France by Le Laboureur founded in 1956 and still producing traditional French workwear in its workshop in Digoin.
